According to the College Board, there are over 160 degree programs in Japan and Japanese studies at colleges and universities across 39 states. Do you find yourself among this academic community? Do you list “Japan” among your research interests? The East-West Center in Washington is excited to announce the inaugural year of a new Japan Studies Fellowship Program, intended for US based Japan-experts.
Established with support from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, this program provides an opportunity for United States-based scholars and analysts of Japan to conduct research in Washington, D.C., on key issues of relevance to the US-Japan partnership.
Key points of the Japan Studies Fellowship Program include:
- A 3 or 6 month residency at the EWC in Washington, which may begin as early as May 2012 and extend until January 2013.
- A monthly stipend ranging from US$2,500 to $4,500 while in residence at EWC in Washington, round trip economy airfare to Washington, D.C., and a one-week research trip to Japan.
- Fellows are to complete an article or monograph on their research topic to be considered for publication, and also give a public presentation on their topic. Fellows may also have the opportunity to contribute to JapanMattersForAmerica.org.
- Applicants must have a minimum of a M.A. degree in a relevant field, and be of either American or Japanese citizenship and based in the United States. Under exceptional circumstances, non-American or non-Japanese nationals with permanent residency in the United States and who specialize on Japan will be considered. Under rare circumstances, American or Japanese citizens residing in Japan may be considered for a fellowship.
- The deadline to apply is March 15, 2012. Applicants will be notified of selection decisions on or before April 13.
The fellowship joins our highly regarded Asia Studies Fellowship Program, which accepts Asian and American scholars and analysts who wish to undertake policy-relevant research on international relations and conflicts in Asia; political change in Asia; U.S.-Asia relations; and/or ASEAN integration and community-building efforts.
