The Japan Matters for America project is nearing the end of its first year of regular updates and articles tracing the US-Japan relationship through its many forms: from security summits to sports exchanges. In celebration of this and the milestone of our 50th post, we would like to take this opportunity to look back at the top ten most popular articles of the last 6 months:
1. Census Counts 767,000 Japanese in US; 88,000 Americans in Japan
The 2010 US Census data reveals an increasingly diverse demographic landscape in America, with Asians as the fastest growing racial-group in the past decade, we recently reported. According to the American Community Survey, a new nationwide survey by the US Census Bureau, 3.4% of America’s foreign-born Asian population, or 343,746, were from Japan.
2. Japanese Language Classes at US Colleges are More Popular than Chinese and Korean Combined
Interest in Japanese language continues to climb. In 2009, more than 73,000 American college students were enrolled in Japanese language classes, up 60% from 1990. Japanese represents 8% of all non-Spanish enrollments and is the 4th most popular non-Spanish foreign language.
3. US Census Reports 17.3 Million Asians in America
Today, 14.7 million identify as “Asian-alone,” comprising 4.8% of the population. More dramatically, the Census names Asians as the fastest-growing racial group of the past decade, increasing an astounding 43.3%.

Among US top export partners over the last decade (countries where the total ten-year value of exports exceeded $100 billion), nine out of nineteen were in the Asia-Pacific. Of these countries over the same period, India, China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore accounted for six of the top ten fastest growing export markets.
